About the Book

The Framework

The Leadership Transformation Compass: A Real-World Atlas for the New Manager charts the path for the journey from unsure and overwhelmed manager to great leader. It is a practical and sensible guide designed to equip first-time managers with valuable skills and strategies to successfully navigate their new roles. The journey is structured around four cardinal points on a leadership compass:

  • North: Self (Chapters 1-7) is where emerging leaders set their inner compass to true north to orient themselves. Where they develop the inner qualities to lead themselves before they can lead others. This is the starting point - where the leadership success journey begins.

  • East: Connection (Chapters 8-14) marks their new beginning. Here, they set out on the leadership path by creating meaningful relationships and connections with their team. This is where they shift from "me" to "we," collaborating and moving forward together.

  • South: Understanding (Chapters 15-19) is their base for stability and grounding. In this phase, they take time to study conditions and map out the terrain by observing, listening, and understanding their team and the overall environment to inform their actions going forward.

  • West: Empowerment (Chapters 20-26) represents the transition into exploring new frontiers. They empower their team to move beyond their current capabilities, embracing growth, and working together to achieve success and tackle challenges as a unified group.

Why This Book Is Different

Forget the textbook jargon and stuffy lectures. Backed by 30+ years of management experience, this is real-world, 'I've been there' advice for new managers struggling with the transition from high performer to first-time leader. Think of it as the essential atlas for navigating this often-uncharted terrain, a journey new managers are likely never fully prepared for.

It is packed with relatable stories, clever and easy-to-grasp analogies and even pop culture references - from magnetic slime to a fire hose nozzle, the Boy in Blue viral video to Ted Lasso - that make what can sometimes be complex ideas instantly understandable. And, more importantly, these clever mental hooks make the lessons easy to recall and apply exactly when you need them most, when chaos or crisis come knocking on your office door.

Because let's be honest, leading isn’t easy, and figuring it out shouldn’t feel like trying to read the stars to find your way. Let’s ditch the jargon and get down to what actually works. And turn you into the leader you wish you’d have had, helping you reclaim your time and navigate with confidence.

Beyond his corporate achievements, Tim is dedicated to serving his community. He has held prominent leadership positions, including Program Manager for TEDx San Antonio, board member for the Fiesta for the Mind nonprofit, and member at large on the San Antonio Arts Commission's Performing Arts, Film, and Music Committee.
